At about 2:20 pm on October 23rd in Sacramento, California a crash occurred involving a bicycle and an SUV. The driver of the SUV swerved onto the wrong side of the road and hit a cyclist. The cyclist then went flying, and the car then proceeded to drive head-on into a tree and burst into flames. The accident occurred near a park and an apartment complex, on a quiet stretch of land.
Neighbors ran to help the victims, but it was too late. The fifty-three-year-old cyclist, identified as a homeless woman named Jessica, and a passenger from the SUV, died on scene. The driver of the car died at the hospital some time later.
Speed is not considered to be a factor in the crash. Fresh bottles of alcohol were found inside of the car, so the police are investigating whether the driver was under the influence. Results of the driver’s toxicology report are currently pending.
Under Massachusetts law, drivers must be attentive and must exercise a certain level of care. Whenever a person steps foot in their car and sits in the driver’s seat, they are responsible for ensuring the safety of their passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. If you or a loved one have been injured due to a negligent driver, you may be able to receive compensation for your injuries from those who are responsible.
