At around 10 a.m. on August 18, 2013, a head-on collision between two cars on Riego Road in Sacramento, CA, resulted in the wrongful deaths of two people and personal injuries to three others. According to initial police reports, a 2008 Mazda carrying three people was traveling east on Riego Road when, for as yet unknown reasons, the car drifted into the other lane, directly into the path of a 2005 Winnebago.
Although all passengers were wearing their seatbelts at the time of impact, the two passengers in the Mazda, a 19 year-old male sitting in the front passenger seat and a 17 year-old male sitting in the left back seat, were killed. The driver, a 23 year-old male, was taken by ambulance to the Sutter Roseville Medical Center emergency room for treatment of major injuries. Meanwhile, both the driver and passenger in the Winnebago, Paul and Dolores Kent, were taken to the hospital emergency room with only minor personal injuries.
Due to the investigation being in its beginning stages and toxicology tests still pending, police have not ruled out the possibility that alcohol or drugs caused the driver of the Mazda to swerve out into oncoming traffic.
